چکیده

We present the Suzaku broad band observations of two AGNs detected by the Swift/BAT hard X-ray (>15 keV) survey that did not have previous X-ray data, Swift J0601.9–8636 and Swift J0138.6–4001. The Suzaku spectra reveals in both objects a heavily absorbed power law component with a column density of NH ≃ 1023.5−24cm−2 that dominates above 10 keV, and an intense reflection component with a solid angle > ∼ 2π from a cold, optically thick medium. We find that these AGNs have an extremely small fraction of scattered light from the nucleus, < ∼ 0.5% with respect to the intrinsic power law component. This indicates that they are buried in a very geometrically-thick torus with a small opening angle and/or have unusually small amount of gas responsible for scattering. In the former case, the geometry of Swift J0601.9–8636 should be nearly face-on as inferred from the small absorption for the reflection component. The discovery of two such objects in this small sample implies that there must be a significant number of yet unrecognized, very Compton thick AGNs viewed at larger inclination angles in the local universe, which are difficult to detect even in the currently most sensitive optical or hard X-ray surveys. Suzaku VIEW OF THE Swift/BAT ACTIVE GALACTIC NUCLEI (I): SPECTRAL ANALYSIS OF SIX AGNS AND EVIDENCE FOR TWO TYPES OF OBSCURED POPULATION

We present a systematic spectral analysis with Suzaku of six AGNs detected in the Swift/BAT hard X-ray (15–200 keV) survey, Swift J0138.6–4001, J0255.2–0011, J0350.1–5019, J0505.7–2348, J0601.9–8636, and J1628.1–5145. This is considered to be a representative sample of new AGNs without X-ray spectral information before the BAT survey. We find that the 0.5–200 keV spectra of these sources can be...

X-ray view of four high–luminosity Swift/BAT AGN: Unveiling obscuration and reflection with Suzaku

Aims. A complete census of obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is necessary to reveal the history of the super massive black hole (SMBH) growth and galaxy evolution in the Universe given the complex feedback processes and the fact that much of this growth occurs in an obscured phase. In this context, hard X-ray surveys and dedicated follow-up observations represent a unique tool for selecting...

Joint Formation of Supermassive Black Holes and Galaxies

The tight correlation between black hole mass and velocity dispersion of galactic bulges is strong evidence that the formation of galaxies and supermassive black holes are closely linked. I review the modeling of the joint formation of galaxies and their central supermassive black holes in the context of the hierarchical structure formation paradigm. 1.1 Supermassive Black Holes in Galactic Bul...

SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLES IN GALACTIC NUCLEI Observational Evidence and Some Astrophysical Consequences

Abstract. I review the status of observational determinations of central masses in nearby galactic nuclei. Results from a variety of techniques are summarized, including ground-based and space-based optical spectroscopy, radio VLBI measurements of luminous water vapor masers, and variability monitoring studies of active galactic nuclei. I will also discuss recent X-ray observations that indicat...

The cosmological evolution of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) seems to be intimately linked to their host galaxies. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) can be probed by deep X–ray surveys. We review results from large X–ray selected samples including first results from the XMM–Newton COSMOS survey. A new picture arises from the fact that high–luminosity AGN grow earlier than low–luminosity AGN. In pa...
